A beautiful grass with thin stems, hung with pale green flowers that look like rain drops as they catch the light. Its brilliant for arrangements in a dark room or a church. The drops act like mirrors and reflect the light.

A brilliant acid-green filler, invaluable for cooking and flower arranging. Its good with whites and blues to bring them to life, and with rich or brilliant colours to heighten their contrasts. Freely self-sows. Hardy annual.

A classy, crimson-black, single-flowered hollyhock. This is a classic, cottage garden plant which is often grown as a biennial to prevent it suffering from rust. Short lived perennial.

A dwarf bush variety dripping in crimson-black French beans. It looks good mixed up in a bowl with the primrose yellow Rocquencourts - very tasty in olive oil, or garlic butter with excellent flavour raw or cooked. Use the same successional sowing plan as Masterpiece.

A fantastic leek with purple-washed leaves which look good right through the winter. It''s a productive and very hardy variety, with a strong flavour, perfect for late autumn, winter and early spring. Sow enough to leave a few unpicked to form flowers and seed pods to decorate your veg garden through the following spring and summer.

A good, healthy variety with dark green leaves, that have a wonderful soft texture as well as excellent flavour. I went to the Manoir aux Quatre Saisons and this is their favourite spinach variety too. Grow it as a cut-and-come-again salad leaf, picked at the baby leaf stage, or space it more widely and harvest leaves fully grown.

A good, multipurpose plant. Eat the fruits, like mini flying saucers, when they are a couple of inches across. And leave them to grow on to use roasted for autumn risottos and soups. They are also one of the best storers and look wonderful piled in ornamental bowls or large plates for the middle of the table.

A great colour mix of deep orange and tangerine flower in single and double forms. Its stems need searing in boiling water to make the flowers last.
